Things to do at Egmont Key

Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge and State Park is a picturesque, family-friendly island open to visitors of all ages, offering a wide range of activities. Relax on pristine beaches, swim in the crystal-clear waters, observe fascinating wildlife, and uncover the island’s hidden gems.

View Tortoises, Nesting Birds & Other Wildlife

Egmont Key provides an excellent habitat for the endangered Gopher Tortoise. Between 1000 - 1500 tortoises roam the interior of the island but can often be seen foraging on vegetation near the beach. As they are endangered, they can be admired but not touched! Florida box turtles can sometimes be seen as you walk the six miles of historic paths. Approximately 30-70 Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the island. Additionally, the island is refuge to over 30,000 nesting pairs of birds, and other wildlife. Bird sanctuaries at the south end of the island make up about 1/3 of Egmont Key, with approximately 97 acres set aside for wildlife to rest, nest, and feed.

Exploring Fort Dade, The Lighthouse & Nature Trail Hiking

Egmont Key is home to historic Fort Dade, built in 1898 and served during the Spanish American War. Although it never saw any battles it was occupied as a military reservation protecting the inlet of Tampa Bay until 1923. Walk through the historic ruins of Fort Dade or along the carriage paths that remain from the days when Fort Dade was an active community with 300 residents. One hundred year old brick roads form the base of most of the trails.

Swimming, Snorkeling & Shelling

Many varieties of shells wash ashore on the beaches of Egmont Key and sharks teeth are often found on the western shores. You can find seashells on the pristine white sand beaches surrounding the island or search for them while swimming or snorkeling. Collection of LIVE shells is not allowed.

What guests say about our Egmont Key Boat Tour

We went on the morning Egmont Key boat tour and it was such a great experience! The boat ride was fun and the crew was very informative and really nice. The island was awesome we saw so many birds and walking along the gulf side was really peaceful, so many shells to look at and the water was beautiful. It was the best way to spend a morning in St Pete, I would highly recommend.

I went on a beautiful Saturday! I did the 4 hour tour to Egmont Key. The boat departed on time and arrived back at said time. I don't remember the staff's names but they were awesome and knowledgeable. The boat had a free water cooler for guest and a bar with alcohol and a few snacks. They allowed outside food and drinks aboard the boat which l liked. You're allowed 2 hours to explore the island by yourself. I recommend walking to the opposite side of the island opposite from where the boat docks. Less crowded and has more of a beach area with nicer sand. Enjoy!

I live here in St. Pete and have walked by the Pelican dozens of times and always wanted to try it. My sister and friends were visiting from NY, so I booked the ferry to Egmont Key. The crew was beyond outstanding! Lou greeted us with a smile and reviewed our waivers (which were easily signed online prior) and welcomed us aboard. The boat captain and the galley crew showed us around and made us feel most welcome. We opened a tab in the galley and never had to go back again to order drinks. The crew checked on us the entire day, whether we were on our way to/from Egmont or while we were enjoying a swim in the Gulf near the boat. The ride was gorgeous. What a great way to spend the morning! We saw a handful of dolphin and the views of the Sunshine Skyway were amazing. We had an amazing day with The Pelican!!
